More than once, people have told me that while I was interpreting on stage, they were trying their own hands at interpretation inside. I was delightfully surprised to find that among these kindred spirits, some were first-comers, while some, as they confessed, were far from being proficient in both English and Mandarin. That’s when I began to see the interpreters in all of us.
Between that spark of interest and comfortably interpreting on stage lies a journey that, contrary to what you might believe, is not infinitely tedious or stubbornly impossible. It’s just a journey of growth, very much like many other journeys in life that we are all eager to endeavor.
