Shadowing II

Posted on November 9, 2022December 2, 2022 by yubo.du

I hope you are still practicing Shadowing. By far, I think it’s the most important exercise for interpreters. If you are getting a hang of it, let’s add a little twist.

Recall from Shadowing I, we repeat the speakers verbatim while they keep talking. The time delay between us and them is called the lag. I told you to start after they have spoken a few words, which comes down to 1 second lag or so. While that’s a healthy start, you can work your brain even more by increasing the lag. Try not to be too ambitious at the beginning. The primary goal is to maintain the exercise for at least 5 min at a time. Once you can do that, add 1 second of lag, and so on. Take your time.

There’s no need to stretch it indefinitely long. As soon as you can comfortably delay 3 seconds, it’s time to move on.
