Although translation and interpretation have many differences, most people use the former to mean both for simplicity’s sake. That’s totally fine for the folks outside this circle, but we can benefit from a bit of distinction.
Largely speaking, interpretation converts verbal speech from one language to another. Translation, on the other hand, focuses on language conversion in the written form. Hence, we interpret sermons and translate documents.
Interpretation comes in different flavors. If the speaker and interpreter take turns speaking, that’s called consecutive interpretation. If interpretation happens while the speaker talks without stopping, that’s called simultaneous interpretation. During simultaneous interpretation, if the interpreter remains right next to the audience (usually one or a limited few) and whispers to them, it’s (of course) whisper interpretation. Liaison interpretation happens when one interpreter performs consecutive interpretation back and forth between multiple parties or individuals. Under this umbrella, when only two parties are involved (not including the interpreter), it’s called bilateral interpretation.
Before the pandemic, our church’s approach had been simultaneous interpretation. Now, we employ consecutive interpretation on stage. Meanwhile, we have a team of dedicated staff performing translation for church documents and publications. On the road, we have worked with whisper interpretation for our pastors. Occasionally, we also perform bilateral interpretation between our leaders and guests to our church.
We continue to hone our skills applicable to all these areas while inviting kindred spirits and willing hearts to join our team, so that our ability and staffing would not become the limiting factor to where God takes us and how much we can serve His people.
