When it comes to interpretation on stage, some interesting questions come up that we normally don’t think of:
Q: Where do I put my hands?
A: For the hand that is not holding the mic, you are encouraged to gesture with it. Otherwise, leave it hanging by the side; it’s not that weird.
Q: Whom do I face?
A: Face the audience. Slowly glance across and above their heads if you are nervous. Just don’t fixate on the speaker.
Q: Does my posture matter?
A: Some studies show that an upright posture increases confidence, improves mood, and reduces stress and self-focus, basically the “silver bullet” for public speaking. (Please, no superman pose. A normal upright posture will do.)
Q: What about attitude, emphasis, and intonation?
A: A simple rule is to mimic the speaker. You can be slightly subdued, but never exaggerate.
