Among the 27 books in the New Testament, some have names that are plural in nature and others, singular. That means we have certain books whose names end in “s” and others that don’t. Until we have them memorized, it’s possible to make the mistakes such as “2 Peters” or “Hebrew”.
The rule of thumb is:
- If it’s about a region or a race, it’s all plural.
- Romans, 1/2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1/2 Thessalonians, and Hebrews.
- If it’s a person, it’s always singular.
- Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, 1/2 Timothy, Philemon, 1/2 Peter, 1/2/3 John, and Jude, which have no ending “s”.
- Meanwhile, Titus and James are singular but end in “s” because of spelling.
Only two remain, which we must remember: “Acts” and, this one always gets me, “Revelation”, not Revelations! I have told myself many times but it still gets me. I hope you do better.
